Have a perfect smile!

“DIRECT” CLEAR ALIGNER BRACES? YOU MAY NOT BE SMILING AFTER ALL!

You may have seen a number of adverts offering to improve your smile with clear aligner braces delivered direct to your door. Some companies even have “shops” where you can have your teeth scanned for them. All we would say is “Buyer beware!” and “Do your research”. Your teeth and smile are far too important to take risks with!

British Orthodontic Society members have long warned of concerns about direct-to-consumer orthodontics. A recent survey showed 82% of members were concerned about more patients seeking DIY orthodontics during the pandemic, and 98.92% wanted the General Dental Council (GDC) take action.

The General Dental Council is the official regulator of dentistry in the UK with a remit to protect the public. They have released a statement and accompanying guidance for patients and professionals regarding direct-to-consumer orthodontic treatment.

The GDC said:

“In line with current authoratitive clinical guidance, and orthodontic training, clinical judgements about the suitability of a proposed course of orthodontic treatment must be based on a full assessment of the patient’s oral health. At present, there is no effective substitute for a physical, clinical examination as the foundation for that assessment.”

In addition:

“Patients must know the full name of the dental professional responsible for their treatment and be able to make direct contact with that person if they need to.”
