PEOPLE RATE ORTHODONTICS QUALITY FIRST
Nearly one fifth (19%) of the British public believes they would benefit from orthodontic treatment, according to a survey.
The research, carried out by Ipsos MORI and commissioned by the British Lingual Orthodontic Society (BLOS), also found that 30% of people are aware of the lingual technique.
Of those who knew of lingual orthodontics, most said they had learned of it from family, friends or colleagues (44%). And 12% said the treatment had been recommended by a dentist or orthodontist.

But only 2% of those interviewed said they became aware of the technique as a result of news about celebrities, such as Myleene Klass, undergoing such treatment.
When asked what mattered most when choosing treatment, quality was rated as the most important aspect (90%), followed by cost (85%) and access to a specialist locally (82%). Treatment time was rated last at 73%.
The survey also asked some general questions about attitudes to teeth and 37% of respondents said they cared more about their teeth today than they had 10 years ago. And 38% of those who cared more said this was because of the rise in cosmetic dentistry.
Chairman of the BLOS Paul Ward said: “These findings demonstrate that the British public take an informed approach to orthodontic treatment.”
