Have a perfect smile!

WIRRAL 6 MONTH SMILES

There has been a lot of attention gained in the press recently regarding brace systems which are supposedly achieving results in very quick times compared to so-called “conventional” orthodontics. In particular the “Inman Aligner” (a removable brace) and “6 Month Smiles” (a type of fixed-on brace) are becoming increasingly popular treatment options, mostly offered by dentists who have not undergone the additional three year training programme required to become a registered specialist in orthodontics.

The marketing for these systems is excellent. Who wouldn’t want a great smile in 6 months or less? And in very mild cases this is achievable, no matter what appliance is used. So long as the forces applied to the teeth are controlled appropriately (and your specialist orthodontist is specifically trained to do this) then the speed which the teeth will move is only limited by how fast your body will allow them to, regardless of the “brand name” of the brace.

The 6 Month Smiles system in particular, is essentially the same as the first six months of conventional orthodontic treatment. There will be a definite improvement in any case during this time. However to get truly excellent results, with the best chances of long term stability and to allow the front and back teeth to bite together properly, treatments often take a little longer, and require a lot of skill from a specially trained clinician to achieve them.

As with any treatments, 6 month smiles and Inman aligners and the like can achieve acceptable results if used in appropriate cases. The key however, is knowing which patients are suitable for them and which aren’t, so it is important that the clinician placing them has the necessary skill and training to understand any potential pitfalls involved and how they can be avoided.

Here at Sunlight Orthodontics our orthodontist, Joe Dwyer is a fully registered specialist, having undergone the extensive training that this requires. So if you are looking for a 6 month smile on the Wirral, give us a call.
